The agency kept her letters all those years and then sent them to my step-dad. I typed them, placed them here between the covers of this book, and added some of my own. The reason? There was a secret in the family that mother never knew. Telling it could be a legacy for her, and for my sister Jan.

Sometimes the more unadorned the message, the more profound the revelation. This is how this book struck me. It is a compilation of letters written by a grateful mother for the blessing of her adopted children and assembled by her biological daughter, who through her own letters and narrative, unveils a dark family secret. The mother's cheerful correspondence, born of her own urgent desire for children, overlays a harmful deception with her own cloak of optimistic naiveté. Through the daughter's poignant portrayal, the offense gradually boils to the surface and the secret is revealed. Although the story has some sharp edges and is layered with regret, the message remains loving and hopeful and presented through the unblemished language of the heart.
